We are studying the developmental mechanisms of the brain using the fly visual center as a model.
Our lab has two names "Mathematical Neuroscience Unit" and "Lab. of Developmental Neurobiology".
The two different researches are on going in our lab.

<Developmental Neurobiology>
The fly visual center shares many important features with mammalian brains: production of wide variety of neurons in accord with order of neuron production and formation of layer and columnar structures accompanying neuronal migrations. Additionally, powerful molecular genetic tools of fly allow us high-resolution genetic manipulations. Using the fly visual system as a model, conserved mechanisms that govern formation of functional neuronal circuits are studied in our lab. Additionally, we use an apparatus called 'insect arena' to examine the functions of neural circuits in the fly visual center.

<Mathematical Neuroscience>
The interdiciplinary researches between biology and mathematics are essential for the further progress of the life sciences. Nevertheless, it is still very difficult to perform a true interdiciplinary research by mutulally combining biological experiments and numerical simulations. Based on the knowledges obtained from the above developmental neurobiology researches, we formulate mathematical models based on the real phenomena. Additionally, we confirm the validity of the models and the predictions from the models by in vivo experiments. We thus perform the true interdiciplinary researches of mathematical neuroscience in a lab. We also study mathematical modelings of stem cell biology by corraborating with other research groups.

Thus, it is the unique property of our lab that we focus on both developmental neurobiology and mathematical neuroscience at the same time.
